THINGS TO DO ON WAIHEKE ISLAND

GETTING AROUND

Getting around the island can be expensive - the bus is the best way to travel cheaply. They no longer accept cash, so you'll need an AT HOP card to travel on the Waiheke Buses. Car Hire is approximately $60 upwards, and the main car hire companies are based at Matiatia Ferry Terminal. CITYHOP has two RAV4 available on the island located at the ferry terminal.

FERRY TRAVEL

Fullers Ferries operate passenger ferries from downtown Auckland to Matiatia. In the summer months, Fullers Ferries can be cancelled at short notice due to cruise ship disruptions; keep an eye on their website, or download their app and enable notifications - just in case.

A new kid on the block operates a ferry service called ISLAND DIRECT. They run at different times than Fullers and cost the same. They are locally owned, and the boats are smaller, but the service is better.

Sealink operate the vehicle ferries from Half Moon Bay to Kennedy Point. They also run some ferries from Wynyard Quarter, particularly over public holidays. Check the Sealink website for details. Now that Auckland Transport (AT) are more involved in travelling to the island, an AT-Hop card can often be the most economical way to travel, even on the ferries; check the AT website for details. Sealink cancels sailings regularly, so we recommend checking their website or downloading their app and turning on notifications.

EATING AND DRINKING

COFFEE & TEA

Waiheke has plenty of coffee options; most are excellent, but some aren't. These are our picks.

ISLAND COFFEE / Ostend 09 372 5177 - islandcoffeenz.co.nz

Local coffee roasters tucked behind the shops on Belgium Street, Ostend, with an intimate, eclectic atmosphere. The coffee is roasted on site and can be purchased as whole beans or ground.

DOUBLE SHOT / Oneroa 027 2DOUBLE

Coffee bar in the heart of Oneroa. Text ahead and your coffee will be ready for pickup.

ISLAND GELATO / Oneroa 021 540 940 - islandgelato.co.nz

Fantastic coffee, Bagels and, of course, the best Gelato store on the island.

TIMMY SMITH / Oneroa 027 290 9400 - timmysmith.co.nz

This gem in the middle of Oneroa offers delicious teas made from natural herbs.

HR16 / Surfdale

HR16 is an espresso and toastie bar in a converted shipping container on Hamilton Road in Surfdale. It’s next to Ideal Electric, making it easy to find. Their menu is small, but perfectly formed. Their coffee is excellent, and their triple cheese toastie is probably the best grilled cheese sandwich we’ve ever eaten.

CAFE & RESTAURANT DINING

Waiheke has a reputation as a gourmet food destination. Whether you are looking for a light café lunch or a romantic dinner, you will be impressed. Here are a few of our favourites.

ALLPRESS OLIVE GROVES / Gordons Road - [email protected]

A recent addition to the Island, Allpress Olive Groves was officially founded in 2021 by Michael Allpress. After 33 years leading Allpress Espresso, Michael, a long-time Waiheke local, began milling from his own trees in 2016, working alongside what was formerly Rangihoua Estate. When the chance came to purchase Rangihoua and another island grove, number29, in 2021, he seized the opportunity to bring a new vision to life. Set among the groves, Bistro Allpress is a casual, informal bistro - bringing together great produce, thoughtful cooking, and good company. With a large courtyard and an outdoor pizza kitchen and bar, it’s a space to relax, eat well, and feel at home. Olive Oil tasting sessions are available.

THE COURTYARD / Oneroa 09 372 9626 - thecourtyardwaiheke.co.nz

The Courtyard Restaurant and Garden Bar has quickly become the local place to be for an exceptional dinner or a drink in the sunny garden bar. Situated down the steps from the viewing platform in central Oneroa, The Courtyard is tucked away but a delightful discovery.

RED CRAB / Oneroa 09 372 9185 - redcrab.co.nz

Red Crab Thai is brought to you by the owners of the legendary Mai Thai, Thai Street and Grasshopper restaurants. HEKE / Onetangi 09 372 0020 - theheke.co.nz

Heke is a reasonably new addition to the island. It has excellent food on the menu, plus local wines and beers, and plenty of space to keep kids occupied. A whisky distillery and microbrewery are on site, plus a brand-new undercover golf simulator.

ADJAZ / Oneroa 09 372 2588 adjaz.com

WAIHEKE GIN Co. / Cowes Bay 09 372 7797 waihekedistilling.co.nz

One of the newer establishments on the island and one that has taken off like a rocket. They make and serve amazing Gin, flavoured with botanicals like Juniper, Pink Peppercorn, Kelp, and Cardamom, and they also do wonderful cocktails, teas, and non-alcoholic drinks. They serve snack-style food and often have a food cart on site.

THREE7TWO / Onetangi 09 372 8846 threeseventwo.co.nz

Right across the road from Onetangi Beach, 372 is a sprawling space with a large dining room and a big outdoor area. The menu, by the excellent Bronwen Laight, is produce-driven and seasonal. It's the best place for a sundowner on the island.

KI MÃHA / Onetangi 09 372 2565 kimaha.nz

Ki Māha is a casual smart beachside restaurant located alongside the beautiful Onetangi Beach on Waiheke Island. The menu combines sustainably harvested seafood and ethically farmed meats, with locally sourced seasonal fruit and vegetables.

ARCADIA / Palm Beach 09 218 9112 arcadiawaiheke.com

Arcadia is a short walk from Palm Beach and offers a casual dining experience with a fresh, inviting menu, plus great wine and craft beer.

APERITIVO / Oneroa 0204 090 0448 aperitivo.co.nz

Aperitivo Bar & Kitchen is a really cool little bar & eatery overlooking Oneroa Beach. Their cocktails are excellent, and the kitchen creates fabulous food, sourcing as much as possible from local growers.

WILD ESTATE / Onetangi 09 372 4225 wildestate.co.nz

Wild Estate is a Vineyard, Brewery and Restaurant. They offer archery between the vines and laser clay pigeon shooting on the lawn, which need to be booked, but they also have lots of free activities: Giant Chess, Pétanque, Trampoline, and Volleyball. Wild takes sharing plates, platters, and grazing boards to a whole new level, all made fresh in our kitchen; people come from far and wide for what's called the best Pizzas on the island. (their words, not ours!)

VINO VINO / Oneroa 09 372 9888 vinovino.co.nz

Vino Vino is one of Waiheke’s stalwarts; the view alone is worth visiting for. Argentinian super chef Connie Aldao took the reins a few years back, and the place has exploded. Connie was part of celebrated chef Francis Mallmann’s team for twelve years and became his head chef. She set up 1884 Restaurant for Mallmann in Mendoza, Argentina. Under her leadership, 1884 was awarded seventh place in the list of ‘The World’s 50 Best Restaurants’, chosen by Restaurant Magazine.

ISLAND FRENCHIE / Oneroa 022 090 0473 facebook.com/islandfrenchie

This place is great; it’s open from 8 am - 2 pm every day. Nico makes fantastic breakfasts, tacos, pork belly burgers, burritos, and more. He also makes spectacular fresh bread which sells out fast, so you need to get there early for that. Nico also has a sweet tooth and creates gorgeous Cremé Brûlée, but his masterpiece is his Canelé. I am not a religious person, but if there is a god and that god made a sweet treat, she would make Canelé! A Canelé is a small French pastry flavoured with rum and vanilla, with a soft, tender custard centre and a dark, thick caramelised crust.

CERAMICS

WAIHEKE CERAMICS / Ostend 09 372 2663 - waihekeceramics.co.nz

Handmade ceramics designed and created here on Waiheke Island. Their designs draw on Danish and Māori heritage. Working with clay appeals to the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi Sabi, which celebrates the beauty of imperfection. Recreate that scene from Ghost and book a lesson with your friends!

WAIHEKE MUSEUM & HISTORIC VILLAGE

WAIHEKE MUSEUM / Onetangi 09 372 2970 - waihekemuseum.org.nz

Experience a slice of old Waiheke. A volunteer-run site that has a reconstructed woodshed, a 1930s island cottage, three Bach-style cottages with period rooms and photo exhibits, a working manually operated telephone exchange and the original Waiheke Jail, which is still in use today; and if you step out of line, you could be spending the night there!

STONEY BATTER RESERVE 021 483 425 - stonybattertunnels.nz

Fort Stony Batter is a WWII Coastal Defence Fortress located at the Eastern end of Waiheke Island. The location was chosen for its strategic advantage of an uninterrupted view of the Hauraki Gulf and the shipping approach to Auckland city. Commissioned in 1942 under absolute military secrecy, the complex comprises 1.2 km of subterranean passages, chambers and stairwells all tunnelled by hand. The fortress was designed to take direct enemy bombardment and is in a very high state of preservation. This is an Architectural, engineering, and Construction marvel. They offer guided tours of the subterranean tunnel complex; in fact, Stony Batter tunnels are something of a tradition and legend amongst the Waiheke community. Abandoned and neglected for 60 years, locals used to adventure in the flooded sections, in the darkness and scare themselves crazy! Also part of the fifty-acre reserve are the stunning 8 million-year-old geological boulder fields, which are not found anywhere else in the Auckland region.

OSTEND MARKET

This a must do on the island, you never know what you’re going to find at the market. Tasty local food, coffee, gifts, bric a brac and bargains are all here.
